Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Frazer Township

FRAZER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A raccoon that was picked up by the Pennsylvania Game Commission in Allegheny County has tested positive for rabies, according to the Allegheny County Health Department.

The raccoon was picked up near Days Run Road and Kurn Road in Frazer Township. It was taken to a state laboratory where it tested positive.

Rabies is a virus transmitted by an animal bite or scratch and can be deadly if left untreated.

The health department is asking for residents to be on the lookout for unusual behavior in animals and make sure pets are up to date on their rabies vaccines.

So far there have been eight rabid animals reported in Allegheny County, including a bat, cat, groundhog and five raccoon.
