Rachel Carson Bridge reopens after $23 million rehab project

Rachel Carson Bridge The Ninth Street Bridge was renamed for Pittsburgh’s famed environmentalist, Rachel Carson, on Earth Day, April 22, 2006.

PITTSBURGH — The Rachel Carson Bridge reopened Monday after being closed since February for a $23.3 million rehabilitation project.

The bridge’s steel structures were repaired, a concrete deck was built, service lines for utilities were installed, expansion dams and drains were replaced, and new sidewalks and lights were installed.

Drivers will see a new lane configuration on the bridge. Instead of four lanes with two in each direction, there are now three.

When traveling from the North Shore, one lane will lead onto the bridge and widen out to two lanes at Fort Duquesne Boulevard. When traveling to the North Shore, one lane will lead onto the bridge and then widen into two lanes on the other side.

The sidewalk on the west side of the bridge will stay closed so crews can repair several handrail posts.
