Resolution calls for Pitt students to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before returning to campus

PITTSBUGH — The University of Pittsburgh’s elected body is pushing for all students to get vaccinated before returning to campus.

The resolution, approved by Pitt’s Senate Council, would impact tens of thousands of students, staff and faculty members.

They are urging Pitt’s administration to enforce it.

The only people exempt are those who provide the necessary medical or religious documentation.

Pitt students and people in Oakland said they are eager to get back to some sense of normalcy, but many have mixed feelings.

“I am vaccinated. I do believe that it is a good thing and that people should be vaccinated. However, I don’t think you can force everyone to be vaccinated and require that,” said Pitt graduate student Brittany Knight.

“I think that the administration will do their best to make the decision that’s best for the campus and the community as a whole,” said Lorra Devenzio of Oakland.

This isn’t a done deal just yet. The resolution again needs administrative approval.

The University of Pittsburgh sent Channel 11 a statement about the resolution, saying,

“The University appreciates this valuable input from the University Senate. Our senior leadership team continues to carefully review a number of options related to the vaccination of our community. Any decision will put health and safety considerations first. We continue to encourage every member of the Pitt community to get vaccinated when it is available to them.”
