Retired Pittsburgh priest sentenced for alleged assault of young boy, not behind bars after bizarre twist

PITTSBURGH — A former Catholic priest from the Diocese of Pittsburgh was in court Thursday facing a lengthy prison sentence after allegations that he sexually assaulted a young boy.

Father Hugh J. Lang, 89, was found guilty of felony unlawful contact with a minor, along with three other misdemeanors in November.

The former priest at Saint Therese in Munhall was sentenced to just under two years behind bars, so why is he not in jail?

A motion regarding the statute of limitations was filed in November 2019 by Lang’s prior attorney after he had been found guilty.

Because that motion was never addressed, Judge Anthony Mariani – now assigned to Lang’s case – allowed the defense attorney to file a post-sentence motion in 10 days with an appeal in 30 days.
