Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene, and the officer was taken to the hospital after being shot twice.
Channel 11 learned Thompson has drug convictions dating to 2007. At the time of the shooting, he was serving a three-year probation sentence for a 2016 drug and gun possession conviction.
He also had two violent crimes -- a 2007 robbery and a simple assault in 2010.
Police sources told Channel 11 they believe Thompson reacted with violence and fired at the agent because he didn't want to go back to jail.
