Route 28 northbound lanes shut down, driver dead following collision with fire truck

TARENTUM, Pa. — It was a horrific scene along Route 28 Friday evening: a man was dead after slamming into the back of a parked fire truck.

Channel 11 learned just 90 seconds before it happened, first responders said they were worried something like this would happen.

“There’s going to be another accident up here. People are flying and not moving over,” crews said over the emergency scanner.

The man’s car could be seen crumpled into the back of the Summit Hose Fire Company’s truck. Officials said the fire crews were responding to an earlier crash when this deadly incident happened.

The driver has been identified as Jeffrey Wagner, 60. Investigators said Wagner was driving too fast, swerved to avoid another vehicle, hit the guard rail and then collided with the fire truck.

The incident caused the highway to be closed for hours from Exit 13 to Exit 17.

State police are investigating what happened.
