Scaffolding collapses from warehouse in Etna

ETNA, Pa. — Scaffolding that fell from the side of a building on Bridge Street in Etna damaged several other buildings on the street.

The scaffolding fell shortly before 5:30 p.m., after hanging from the building, and is part of the reconstruction project of the warehouse at 51 Bridge St., which is being redeveloped into a “tech flex” space with a mix of office spaces and technology companies.

According to a news release from developer The AM Group, the building was constructed in 1902.

The road was closed and nearby buildings were evacuated shortly before the scaffolding fell. The American Red Cross was dispatched to help five families who were displaced.

Neighbors reported hearing the scaffolding moving as the wind blew for most of the day. A worker on the building said the scaffolding was tied to the structure, but must have become dislodged in the wind. They attempted to secure the scaffolding before the collapse, but were unable to do so because it was touching live power lines.

The AM Group issued a statement late Saturday night saying:

“While coordinating remediation with our contractors, local government officials, emergency services in Etna, and utility companies, we are confident this will soon be resolved. We are thankful there were no injuries and thankful for the great work of the emergency response services of Etna, especially Etna police Chief Rodman, for the quick and decisive action. The AM Group is committed to getting this resolved and committed to the Borough of Etna in redeveloping this project.”
