NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A second suspect wanted in connection with the murder of a Butler County native who was working as an ICU nurse in Nashville has been arrested, police announced Tuesday.
According to Nashville police, 28-year-old James Cowan was taken into custody as he arrived at an apartment complex in Nashville.
Investigators said undercover detectives and ATF agents were conducting surveillance and were able to arrest Cowan.
Cowan was wanted after Caitlyn Kaufman was shot and killed along a highway in Nashville while heading to work. The windshield of her SUV was shattered and her back windows were destroyed by gunfire. It’s not clear if it was a targeted killing, random or a road rage incident.
A concerned citizen came forward with information on Dec. 10 that led to the arrest of another man, 21-year-old Devaunte Hill, and implicated Cowan’s involvement, according to court documents.
A search of Hill’s and Cowan’s cell phones confirmed to police the two know each other and that Cowan was in the area of the shooting at the time of the homicide. Investigators believe he was in a car with Hill, who police allege shot and killed Kaufman.
Both men are charged with criminal homicide.
