Sen. Toomey open to supporting bipartisan infrastructure bill, but still has questions

PITTSBURGH — Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) said he is open to supporting a bipartisan infrastructure bill, but there are several questions he wants answered

including how it will be funded.

The compromise reached last week by a bipartisan group of senators and the White House would fund roughly a trillion dollars worth of projects.

In a wide ranging interview with Channel 11 News, Toomey said he hopes to see unused COVID-19 relief money help pay for the bill, which includes

money for roads, bridges, clean water, broadband access and more.

“I think the obvious solution is repurpose some of the many hundreds of billions, actually it’s over $1 trillion of unspent money from previous

bills,” he said.

The two-term Senator also spoke about another hot button issue - voting rights.

Last week, senate Republicans blocked a voting rights bill pushed by Democrats.

Toomey doesn’t expect any other voting rights bill to be considered.

“I don’t think it’s going to happen and I don’t think it needs to happen. Fifty states are going to decide how to conduct elections in their

respective states and I think that’s perfectly fine,” he said.

Toomey announced earlier this year he will not run for reelection in 2022.
