Several businesses across southwestern Pa. choosing to stay closed

People have very mixed and personal feelings about what should or shouldn't reopen across Pennsylvania amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some stores and major companies allowed to welcome back customers are choosing not to, and the reason may surprise you.

Mall anchor stores like Macy's and Nordstrom are locked. Simon Property Group, the owner of the Ross Park Mall and South Hills Village Mall, told Channel 11 they're remaining closed for the safety of shoppers, employees and the community.

Homegoods, Marshall’s and TJMaxx are also choosing to stay closed.

The CEO of TJX, the parent company of those stores, took a pay cut and furloughed workers – saying the company is prioritizing "the health and well-being of our associates, customers and the communities we serve."

At the Tanger Outlets in Washington County, only about a dozen of the outlet's 75 stores are open.

Businesses, small and large, told Channel 11 they're not reopening yet because their employees don't feel safe working in this climate.

With some big box stores like Bed Bath & Beyond and JC Penney closed, shoppers are staying local.
