Some Pitt students will be living in hotels instead of residence halls this year

PITTSBURGH — Some University of Pittsburgh students will be living in hotels instead of residence halls this year.

An estimated 25% of first-year students will live in three hotels near campus to reduce density in residence halls, the university announced Tuesday.

Students were notified Tuesday of their housing assignments for the upcoming academic year.

Email notifications were sent for the 11 residence halls on the Pittsburgh campus, as well as the following three hotels:

• Residence Inn, Pittsburgh University Medical Center at 3896 Bigelow Boulevard
• Residence Inn, Pittsburgh University Place at 3341 Forbes Avenue
• Wyndham Pittsburgh, University Center at 100 Lytton Avenue

“Student housing is being expanded with hotels to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission,” a news release said. “Each hotel will operate in the same way as campus housing, with 24-hour security as well as Resident Assistant and Resident Director staff to provide supervision and support.”

Like residence halls such as Forbes, Lothrop and Sutherland, the hotels are within a 15-minute walk of the Cathedral of Learning, school officials said.

University shuttle routes will be updated to provide service to the hotels.
