GREENSBURG, Pa. — Restaurant owners in South Greensburg say Thanksgiving Eve is one of their biggest nights of the year and called the early stoppage of alcohol sales defeating, especially when they’re already struggling during the pandemic.
“You typically do at least double,” Gwendollynn Moreland said.
She owns Morelands at Waterworks and knows how crucial the night before Thanksgiving is to the bottom line.
“It’s usually a very lucrative night for your tipped employees as well because people have a tendency to be more generous because it is such a big night and they seem to be working so hard, so the cause and effect of that keeps going down,” Moreland said.
She and her husband opened their restaurant in February and two weeks later they were shut down. The order to stop selling alcohol at 5 p.m. is, once again, hitting them deep in their pockets.
“Even then, going into ordering your pop and cranberry juice and all the things that go into that, you gave us again 24-hours notice, or less. We can’t cancel those orders. Those orders are already coming. Not only are we losing revenue, we now have inventory on the shelf,” she said. “We’re just going to try to make the best of a pretty terrible situation.”
Morelands will have in-person dining and to-go cocktail and food specials until they close at 10 p.m.
