If you have a spare horse lying around you don’t need, the Pennsylvania State Police might be able to use it.
The force is asking for donations to augment its 26-horse mounted patrol unit. Those troopers work statewide to assist in crowd control, searches and other operations.
Horses must be geldings between the ages of 5 and 15 years old, and stand between 16 hands(5 foot 4 inches at the shoulder) and 18 hands tall, the force said. Drafts and draft-crosses are preferred.

Thoroughbreds and other “hot bloods” are less desirable.
The animals must have quiet dispositions and be free of serious stable vices. Horses will be accepted on a 120-day trial basis to determine their suitability. A veterinary examination will also be performed.
The stable is maintained in Hershey.
