PITTSBURGH — As a boy growing up in California, Najee Harris lived in a homeless shelter with his family.

On Thursday, the former University of Alabama running back and first-round NFL Steelers draft pick returned to the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program shelter in Richmond, Calif. to greet residents and staff as they prepared to watch the much-anticipated draft, according to CNN.

Harris, 23, who was the Steelers’ 24th pick in the first round on Thursday, lived in the shelter in 2010 with his mother and four siblings, when he was just 12-years-old.

Since becoming one of the top college recruits in the country before heading to Alabama in 2017, Harris made helping the homeless one of his main goals. He was named to the 2020 Southeastern Conference Football Community Service team in recognition of his work in the community.
