Stolen gun found loaded in 11-year-old's backpack at school, police say

WHITE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A loaded gun was found in a students hand after he found it in his backpack at in Indiana County school on Monday.

Police said the 11-year-old was in a classroom at Saint Bernard Regional Catholic School with his teacher and another student right after the school day started.

The teacher noticed the student was displaying unusual behavior, then observed him holding the firearm. Police said the gun was fully loaded.

Police said when the student arrived at school, he noticed that his backpack felt heavier than normal and found the gun inside. The teacher told police the student was visibly distraught after finding the gun.

The student's guardian reported the revolver missing on Saturday, police said.

Police said the school safely took the gun away and police do not believe the child knew the gun was in his backpack before coming to school.

No charges are pending against the student.

Police are continuing to investigate and are working to identify the person responsible for putting the firearm into his backpack.
