Some business owners are worried that revitalization comes with a price tag they can’t afford, and a loss of parking spaces means fewer customers.
The owner of Yinzers in the Strip told Channel 11 the last few years have been challenging. McDonald’s on Penn Avenue is out of business and other small store owners say rising rents are forcing them out.
There are more than 10,000 parking spaces in the Strip District, but the majority of those are leases. That means essentially seven out of every 10 are already taken, leaving just a small percentage for those visiting the area.
City council is working behind the scenes to free up more spaces by possibly using nearby garages.
