PITTSBURGH — An 18-year-old student has been officially charged in connection with a brutal fight at Pittsburgh’s Brashear High School last week.
Quincey Garland was charged with felony level aggravated assault.
According to a criminal complaint, school police officers responded to the fight on the second floor of the high school Friday morning while classes were changing. They first encountered a student threatening a teacher and removed him from the area. Court documents state officers did not notice the victim on the floor “due to multiple students standing around.”
Once officers returned, they found him on unconscious on the ground being attended to by the school nurse. After a few minutes, the student regained consciousness. He was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital for treatment.
The complaint states investigators reviewed school surveillance video and found the victim and another student fighting with Garland. A teacher grabbed the other student and pulled him away, causing them both to fall to the ground. The victim and Garland continued throwing punches. Officers said the video then showed Garland pick up the victim, slam him head-first into the floor and kick him in the head five times in a row.
School officials said this was the fourth incident between the victim and Garland so far this school year. There was a court hearing already scheduled for early February for a prior incident between them.

Video sent to Channel 11 showed the violent fight in the school hallway.
Days after the violent incident, the Brashear High School principal was placed on administrative leave, according to a district spokesperson.
Friday’s fight follows several other incidents of violence.
In November, a school police officer was hurt after being assaulted by four students. In a separate incident, a student allegedly punched a school officer -- the same officer who was hurt in October while breaking up a fight outside the school.
