Temporary art installation recently unveiled on Penn Ave.

PITTSBURGH — A large-scale temporary art installation was recently unveiled on Penn Ave.

The 3,500-square-foot mural created by artist Jayla Patton was completed on Aug. 21 and can be found in the 900 block, between 9th and 10th streets, remaining in place until Nov. 2, according to a press release from the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership.

The mural, titled “Colorful Growth/Soft Waves” was commissioned by the P, and is the first of several temporary public art installations as part of the group’s “REFORGE Downtown” initiative, that invites the community to safely revisit and reengage with Downtown through unique events, activations, and programs.

Patton is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and has a background as an illustrator, comic artist, animator and educator.

The installation was borne out of discussions with stakeholders along the 900 block of Penn Avenue back in July, while considering adjusted street layout and design for pedestrians and businesses to accommodate social distancing protocols, according to the release.

“I am excited to explore storytelling through color in Downtown Pittsburgh,” Patton said. “Color really affects mood, so bringing bright color bursts and a dynamic visual change to the urban landscape will impact people in really interesting ways. You are compelled to slow-down, reexamine, rethink. In the ‘new normal’ we find ourselves, it’s so important that we take some time to reflect.”
