Tree of Life moving forward with new building in Squirrel Hill

PITTSBURGH — The Tree of Life is moving forward with a new building planned in Squirrel Hill and unveiled its plans during a news conference Tuesday.

Officials said it’s an exciting and hopeful step forward.

The new Tree of Life will have a worship space, classrooms and a space for exhibits from the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh.

This will be a place to continue to remember the 11 lives lost there during worship in 2018, officials said.

Architect Daniel Libeskind was chosen to head the project.

He also helped rebuild the 9/11 site in New York City.

“The things that he wrote about, his background and why he wanted to help deal with issues of antisemitism, and to help educate people to move forward after such a terrible tragedy as we suffered here,” said Carol Sikove Gress, president of Tree of Life.

Officials haven’t said when construction will start or be finished.

Channel 11′s Joe Arena is working to find out more about what’s being planned for the new building for Channel 11 News beginning at 5 p.m. on TV and our WPXI Now streaming apps.
