UNIONTOWN, Pa. — Uniontown Hospital in Fayette County is being pushed to the max. The surge in COVID-19 cases has filled the intensive care unit, and it’s all hands on deck.
“How quickly our numbers have moved,” said Dr. Surabhi Gaur, medical director at Uniontown Hospital. “We’ve doubled twice in two weeks. I think that’s what’s really alarming.”
All 15 beds in the ICU are taken, so the hospital has made drastic changes to care for its community, adding a secondary area with 11 beds to care for coronavirus patients.
Because of the virus surge, the hospital is full. Fifty employees are out for COVID-19-related reasons, and hospital leaders with clinical experience are out of the office and bedside.
Gaur said this is serious but manageable, stressing that they are open and not turning anyone away.
