MONROEVILLE, Pa. — The emergency room at UPMC East has doubled its capacity and will be able to see more patients, the hospital system announced Friday.

The hospital, located in Monroeville, will begin seeing new patients in the expanded emergency room starting Aug. 24.

The $24 million expansion started in April 2019 and added 30,000 square feet to the hospital. It also increased private emergency rooms from 24 to 44.

“Since opening UPMC East eight years ago, we have expanded comprehensive services like heart and vascular, orthopaedic and oncology care and have seen continual growth in the number of patients seeking care in our emergency department,” Mark O’Hern, president of UPMC East said in a news release. “By expanding this area, we are able to better meet the needs of our community, improving access and significantly reducing wait times for our emergency patients.”

A retail pharmacy will be added to the emergency department and is expected to open this fall.
