PITTSBURGH — UPMC hospital workers will participate in a one-day strike Thursday, demanding that the health care network end its history of “egregious” violations of workers’ rights, a news release said.
According to the release, the violations of workers’ rights include illegal harassment and discharges of workers supporting a union. Workers want UPMC to implement the National Labor Relations Board’s remedies for past illegal acts.
Joined by community supporters, labor and movement allies, and elected leaders and candidates for office, workers from every UPMC facility in Pittsburgh will march at 4 p.m. from Smithfield Church to UPMC Headquarters on Grant Street.
At 4:30 p.m., a news conference will be held on the steps of the US Steel Tower to highlight UPMC’s alleged illegal acts and their impact on the city.
Two recent decisions by the NLRB, known as UPMC II and UPMC IV, are part of a series of cases brought against UPMC for unfair labor practices.
“In UPMC II, the NLRB upheld an Administrative Law Judge’s order for broad remedies in response to ‘widespread and egregious’ disregard for workers’ rights, including unlawful firings, threats, and interrogations. In UPMC IV, the NLRB ordered UPMC hospitals to rescind unlawful policies preventing worker communication and to cease unlawful intimidation, threats, and surveillance of workers,” according to the news release on Thursday’s one-day strike.
