Surveillance video shows the moment a runaway garbage truck crashed into Ligonier Borough’s town hall early Monday morning.

“The truck drifted, kind of veered to the left and they weren’t able to get in to stop it. (It) took out a couple parking meters, and as you can see, it went through the first wall and then council chambers and caused quick a bit of damage,” said Ligonier Valley Police Chief John Berger.

Bricks were blown out and insulation was scattered throughout council chambers. Berger believes the cost of fixing the building will be in the six-figure range.

“This is very well cleaned up from what I saw. There was debris out as far as you can see on the carpet. The mayor and I, when we have council meetings, we sit right here, our stuff was all pushed forward," Berger said.

Police believe the parking brake on the McInchok Sanitation truck wasn’t engaged. But it was the timing of the crash that made all of the difference.

“The time that it happened was a good time because Ligonier has a lot of morning walkers and it was before that and I’m really glad the young men weren’t in front of the truck," Berger said.

Ligonier Valley Police said they aren’t sure if the driver will be cited. They’re waiting on the truck to be inspected.
