PITTSBURGH — Between the pandemic and potential unrest, safety is top of mind for people voting in person on this Election Day.

If you’re heading to the polls Tuesday, don’t forget to grab your mask, your own pen (either black or blue ink -- not gel) and hand sanitizer or wipes.

While polling locations received extra supplies, it’s recommended that you bring your own.

State leaders and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency have been working together to ensure everyone will be safe if they choose to go to the polls.

Dr. Samuel Daisley, Vice President of Medical Affairs/Chief Medical Officer at UPMC Horizon, said people need to do their part, too, by wearing masks properly by having their nose and mouth covered.

“No one should be worried more about going to vote than they should going to get a quart of milk at the store or gas at the gas station. We’ve put the same precautions in place, and just keep your distance. Wash your hands. Wear your mask. Don’t be afraid to wash your hands as you move to each station,” Daisley said.

If you can, vote in the middle of the day. That’s usually when there are fewer people at the polls, with the rushes tending to happen between 7-9 a.m. and 5:30-8 p.m.

However, don’t be discouraged by long lines. People should be standing six feet apart while in line, so that’s going to make wait times seem longer than they actually are.
