BALDWIN, Pa. — A Baldwin Borough couple and their foster son have been displaced after a driver crashed into their house and took off Sunday morning.
The damage is believed to be at least $150,000.
“We just heard the absolute loudest crash…. And not only did I feel the house shake. I felt the house wobble back and forth,” said Maria Neumeyer of Baldwin Borough.
Maria Neumeyer and Dana Didolce’s world has been turned upside down.
The couple is still carefully cleaning up the pieces after a driver crashed into the back of their Churchview home around 2 a.m. Sunday.
“All that glass breaking. You just knew it wasn’t somebody just trying to like break in or an accident. You knew something severe had happened,” said Neumeyer.
From the basement — to the first floor — to the upstairs staircase — the damage is catastrophic.
“That wall right there is all brick. This right there is the landing. He completely dislodged this from the brick foundation,” said Neumeyer.
Restoration crews are now assessing the damage.
The crash was so bad that Neumeyer, Didolce and their 19-month-old foster baby boy had to be rescued from upstairs by emergency crews.
What’s most surreal they say is where the car hit.
Our Channel 11 camera captured their foster son’s toys, broken bottles and portions of wall scattered all over the place.
“My foster son, he actually plays in that room in that corner. He had a ball pit in that room
and our dining room table, a ride on table and even if we had been sitting on the couch with the impact... Wow.”
Neumeyer says she’s furious the driver took off after causing such a horrible crash.
She says he was arrested shortly after the incident.
However, she believes the timing was that of a miracle and she says she is so grateful the house didn’t collapse.
“The fact that it happened when it did is kind of a blessing in disguise because it could’ve ended a lot differently and had he [their foster son] been in that room, we would’ve been in that room,” said Neumeyer.
The couple and their foster son are now staying with family in the area.
Criminal charges are pending against the driver.
