Homes damaged, road closed after water line break in Hays

PITTSBURGH — Several homes were damaged and a portion of a road is closed after an early morning water main break in the Hays section of Pittsburgh.

A 12 inch water line broke around 5 a.m. Tuesday along Baldwin Road between State Route 885 and Comer Street.

The water from the broken line sent water pouring into people’s yards and into at least 10 homes homes, knocking down trees and sending debris into the roadway. A disaster restoration team is working to repair those homes.

Kathy Dietz owns one of those homes and she let Channel 11 take a look inside her basement where the water rose several feet.

“There was just a ton of water coming off the hillside the whole basements filled the washers floating the fridge is floating it’s totally filled up almost to the first floor,” Dietz said.

Water service is disrupted to approximately 12 customers, and it expected to be restored by this evening, Pennsylvania American Water officials said.

A portion of Baldwin Road is remains closed as crews work to repair the break and is expected to reopen by Friday afternoon’s commute.
