BUTLER COUNTY, Pa. — A widening project on a 3-mile stretch of Route 228 will hopefully ease traffic congestion for drivers in Butler County.

The project will start at Franklin Road, near North Catholic High School in Cranberry Township, and continue east.

Route 228 will be made into two lanes in each direction through Seven Fields and Adams Township to Pittsburgh Street, connecting to widening that is already happening in that area.

A couple ways PennDOT plans to improve the highway’s capacity and safety are with the addition of roundabouts on roads near Route 228, as well as jughandles for left turns.

Officials said the project is needed because of development in southern Butler County.

It’s not clear when exactly the project will start because it’s not fully funded and is estimated to cost $105 million. PennDOT officials said if Butler County gets a grant, work could start in 2022-23.
