Woman accused of scamming local charities out of money, gifts

UPPER ST. CLAIR, Pa. — Police in several Allegheny County communities are investigating a woman who is accused of targeting charities on social media to get money.

The Pittsburgh and Upper St. Clair police departments have both confirmed they’ve received complaints about this woman.

The number of victims in Upper St. Clair is growing, but police said they will not release the suspect’s name or details about the accusations because it could jeopardize their investigation.

Two people who said they were victims told Channel 11’s Michele Newell the suspect goes by a number of different names on social media, then targets groups that are looking to help families in need.

The suspect then allegedly makes up stories to get donations that include money and other gifts.
