CENTER TWP., Pa. — Investigators are working to determine what caused a deadly fire in Center Township, Beaver County on Wednesday morning.
According to officials, a husband and wife in their 70s were the only two inside when the fire broke out. The woman did not survive.
“These times are not easy for us,” said Center Township Fire Chief William Brucker.
First responders were called to the burning home on Center Grange Road around 8:30 a.m. The 911 call came from inside the residence, with the caller stating that a couch was on fire, officials said.
Police officers and some passersby were the first on scene. According to officials, the man has escaped but the woman was trapped inside.
“I saw the man on the stretcher... I saw the whole front of the house on fire... I just think it’s terrible,” said neighbor Lee Doran.
Firefighters managed to enter the burning structure and pull the woman out. They tried to resuscitate her but it was too late, authorities told Channel 11. Meantime, the man was taken to the hospital.
“These things are never easy for a community,” said Center Township Police Capt. Jon Hall.
Officials said they believe the fire started in the living room, but the exact cause remains under investigation.
