PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh has been named the top public university in the Northeastern United States, according to rankings by the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings.
According to university officials, this is the fourth time in five years that Pitt has been recognized as No. 1 on this list. In addition to being named the top public university in the northeast, Pitt was also ranked No. 25 among best public schools in the country.

The ranking is based on 15 factors across four key areas: student outcomes, including graduate salaries and debt burdens (40%), academic resources (30%), student engagement (20%) and diversity (10%).
In September 2019, the U.S. News & World Report ranked Pitt among the nation’s top 20 public colleges and universities in their 2020 Best Colleges rankings.
There were multiple universities that tied for second behind Pitt in the public school category. One of them was Penn State University.
