‘You ripped my sister away’: Family, friends gather to pray for justice for woman killed

PITTSBURGH — A vigil was held Tuesday for Ashley Roberts, a 34-year-old killed in Sheraden on Sunday.

Days after Roberts was found with suspected gunshot wounds and struck by a vehicle along Minton Street, her loved ones gathered in the same spot to honor her life.

“We worked together. We did everything together. The kids, we would go swimming. She would come over to the house. She was a wonderful mom, a great daughter, granddaughter, and it’s hurting everybody,” said Roberts’ best friend, Melanie Sorochman. “You could call her anytime if you needed anything. ... I just love her and really do miss her.”

Those who attended the vigil were asked to wear Sto-Rox colors because Roberts was a dedicated football mom.

“Our son’s played high school football together,” Rickelle Young said. “She was an avid Sto-Rox fan. She would do anything for those kids. She was all about her kids.”

Channel 11 also spoke to Roberts’ brother, Brandon Crosby.

“This shouldn’t have happened to her. She was a great person through and through,” Crosby said.

The day Roberts was killed, police also found a man with a gunshot wound to the head at a Sunoco in a neighborhood next to Sheraden.

The male victim, who hasn’t been identified, said the shooting happened in Sheraden. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and was listed as being in stable condition.

Police also told Channel 11 that 22 shell casings were found at the scene on Minton Street. They have yet to publicly name anyone as a suspect in Roberts’ death.

Crosby said while he has no idea who could have done this to his sister, he has a message for that person.

“Just know that you ripped my sister away from a family of four children that will never see their mother again,” Crosby said. “I hope justice will be served.”

A spaghetti dinner will also be held in Roberts’ honor and to help raise funds for funeral costs on Sunday, January 30 from 3:00pm-8:00pm at Mo’s West Park Diner on Broadway Avenue in McKees Rocks. Tickets are $10 a plate.
