GLENDALE, Wis. — A Wisconsin family found a live frog Thursday in a bag of organic lettuce they purchased from the grocery store.
The amphibian fell out of a bag of Simple Truth Organic lettuce while the family was making a salad for dinner, TMJ reported.
"I'm across the room and I hear a shriek and a thud," Karlie Allen told TMJ. "I'm thinking one, how the heck did that get in there, and two, that is absolutely disgusting."
They returned the lettuce and let the frog go.
Simple Truth apologized for the incident.
The grocery store said small animals can occasionally get trapped during the manufacturing process.
"These situations happen from time-to-time when organic products are involved. USDA certified organic items must be free of synthetic additives and certain pesticides," Roundy's, the parent company of Pick 'n Save where the lettuce was purchased, said in a statement. "Although rare, from time-to-time we do see insects and other small animals, such as frogs, make it through packaging and fresh produce items."
