NEW YORK — A young Swedish climate activist dubbed “the voice of the planet” arrived in the United States on Wednesday after a 15-day boat trip across the Atlantic Ocean from Plymouth in the United Kingdom to New York.
Greta Thunberg, 16, is attending the United Nations Climate Action Summit next month but didn’t want to leave a carbon footprint to travel to the U.S.

Instead, Thunberg sailed across the Atlantic in a boat named the Malizia II, setting sail on Aug. 14 with her arrival delayed by one day due to rough seas, The New York Times reported.
Thunberg documented her voyage on social media, most recently posting a shot of herself on Instagram sailing into New York with the Manhattan skyline in the background.
Thunberg rose to international fame after staging solitary protests against climate change in front of the Swedish parliament building in August 2018. Soon, others began joining her in front of the building and eight months later, the teenager’s protests sparked the international Fridays for Future movement involving young people around the world.
