Teddy bear toss: Hershey Bears hockey team breaks world record for teddy bear donations again

HERSHEY, Pa. — Hershey, Pennsylvania, is known for one thing CHOCOLATE. But you can add another thing Hershey is now known for - teddy bear tossing.

The Hershey Bears hockey team held it's annual Teddy Bear Toss and broke the record the team set with 34,798 last year, WHP reported.

This year the Bears collected 45,650 stuffed animals thrown to the ice at the Giant Center about 8 minutes into the first period when Christian Djoos scored, WHP reported.

The bears were bagged up and will be donated to schools, food banks, churches and other charities for the holidays, WGAL reported.

CommunityAid is also donating a quarter per stuffed animal, or more than $11,400, to the Children's Miracle Network and one club seat owner for the team will donate $1 per bear to the Sweigart Family Foundation, WHP reported.

The Bears ended up winning the game, too, beating Hartford Wolf Pack 4-3 in overtime, USA Today reported.

The AHL Bears were not the only team to host a Teddy Bear Toss.

Bakersfield Condors held a similar event on Saturday night, NBC Sports reported.

While the WHL's Calgary Hitmen held its event on Sunday afternoon, according to NBC Sports. The Hitmen have been hosting a toss since 1995 and have collected 402,608 stuffed animals over the past 24 years.
