3 killed, including 2 Pennsylvania state troopers, in Philadelphia I-95 crash

PHILADELPHIA — Three people, including two Pennsylvania state troopers, are dead following an overnight crash along an interstate in Philadelphia, authorities said.

Update 12:18 p.m. EDT March 21: Pennsylvania State Police have identified the troopers who were killed in Monday’s crash.

They were Martin Mack III, 33, and Branden Sisca, 29, WGAL reported.

The third person’s identity was not released as of early Monday afternoon.

Officials said the troopers were on the scene along Interstate 95 after receiving calls about a man who had been walking in the southbound lanes of the highway.

“As they were attempting to put him into custody and walk him back to the vehicle, a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the left lane, in between the jersey barrier and the left lane, itself, traveled at a high rate of speed and struck all three individuals,” Capt. James Kemm said in a news conference, according to WGAL.

The troopers were thrown into the northbound lanes of the highway from the impact, KYW reported.

Troopers said the investigation is ongoing and is DUI-related, KYW reported.

Update 6:04 a.m. EDT March 21: Pennsylvania State Police tweeted that the troopers and a civilian were struck and killed about 12:40 a.m. Monday on Interstate 95 southbound near mile marker 18.

Original report: According to WTXF-TV and WPVI-TV, the incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Monday on Interstate 95 southbound near Broad Street. The crash killed two troopers during a traffic stop, WPVI reported. One civilian also died, authorities said.

Officials have not said what caused the wreck, which shut down all lanes of the freeway, the news outlets reported. The names of the victims were not immediately available.
