Baby boom: Louisville Zoo announces birth of Hartmann’s mountain zebra

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The baby boom continues at the Louisville Zoo.

A female Hartmann’s mountain zebra was born shortly before 12 a.m. EDT on May 12, zoo officials said in a news release.

The new foal was born to Azizi, a 6-year-old Hartmann’s mountain zebra, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported. The frisky filly is already “running around and keeping mom busy,” zoo officials said.

The filly weighed 71 pounds at her neonatal exam, according to the zoo. Her name will be determined soon.

Last week, zoo officials said that Kianga, a Masai giraffe, will be giving birth in the coming weeks, according to WLKY-TV. In early May, the zoo announced the first harbor seal birth in its history.

In April, zoo officials announced in a news release that two waldrapp ibis chicks hatched in late February. The zoo has had 18 ibis chicks hatch at the facility since 1993, but February’s new arrivals were the first in four years.

“We are ecstatic to have so much to celebrate this spring. These new offspring will be wonderful ambassadors to tell the stories of their species,” Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney said in a statement.  “We look forward to watching this new filly grow with our community and sharing news about our pending giraffe birth.”

The zoo has a website that offers a live feed of the newborn new harbor seal, the Courier-Journal reported. It also has updates about recent and expected births among animals, according to the newspaper.
