KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A bear was killed after it was found eating human remains in the Great Smoky Mountains, wildlife officials said on Saturday.
Park rangers found male human remains at a campsite along the Hazel Creek Trail around 7 p.m. Friday, WVLT reported.
Hikers who reported the discovery to officials found the remains and saw a bear scavenging the area. Rangers quickly got to the area and after watching the bear eat the remains, killed it.
The identity of the victim, who was visiting from out of state, has not been released. The cause of death is still unknown.
The Hazel Creek Trail between Cold Springs Gap Trail and Welch Ridge Trail remains closed.
