Philadelphia Police told WCAU that the victim was unloading groceries in his driveway just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when the suspect approached with a gun and said, “This is a robbery.”

Before the suspect could take the car, the victim, 69, was able to take control of the suspect’s gun and fire it. The bullet grazed the suspect’s abdomen, WPVI reported. Police told the station that the suspect ran away after he was shot and was found nearby.

“The game has changed. Kids are getting shot, people getting carjacked in their 60s,” Philadelphia Police Capt. John Walker told KYW-TV.

Neighbors who heard the struggle called 911 and police were in the area moments later, WCAU reported. The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

“We don’t recommend people fighting with people that have guns,” Walker told WCAU. “In this situation, it turned out to be a good thing where he was able to wrestle the gun, injure the defendant and bring him into custody; but we don’t recommend that.”

The victim’s hand suffered a bite, but police told WPVI that he refused medical attention.

The suspect will face robbery, carjacking and other charges, police told WCAU.
