Lori Lightfoot, the first Black woman and the first openly gay person to serve as Chicago’s mayor, lost her reelection bid on Tuesday.
Lightfoot, 60, came in third behind former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas and Cook County Commissioner and Chicago Teachers Union organizer Brandon Johnson, according to The Chicago Sun-Times.
Vallas and Johnson will face each other in a runoff on April 4.
Lightfoot, who received 17.06% of the vote, faced criticism over a spike in violent crime in the city.
A former federal prosecutor, she had a contentious relationship with the police union during her term after fighting over overtime pay and the city’s vaccination policy.
A face-off with the Chicago Teachers Union shortly after she got into office in 2019 led to a 14-day teacher strike.
Lightfoot becomes the first Chicago mayor to fail to get reelected in more than 40 years.
