MOBILE, Ala. — An Alabama woman was not over the moon about her school district’s mask policy, so she protested by wearing a space helmet at Monday night’s meeting.

The unidentified woman, who left before the Mobile County Alabama Public School System meeting ended, was part of a group of protesters who were objecting to the mask mandate in county schools caused by the coronavirus pandemic, WPMI reported.

The two dozen protesters were part of a group called Parent’s Choice Mobile County Schools, the television station reported.

“They schedule the meetings when most conservatives are at work. We got everybody we could get here today. Everybody else is out there doing their jobs,” Mike Wilson told WPMI.

Wilson added that group members do not believe masks are an effective deterrent against COVID-19, adding that the face coverings are actually harming their children.

“Everything inside that mask you’re breathing in right now is what you’ve already breathed out, it’s stuck to the mask and it builds up germs obviously and you suck it back in,” Wilson told WPMI. “We are not pro or against masks. We are against being mandated to wear a mask. We are against being mandated to be vaccinated. We are against being mandated to do anything our constitutional rights don’t give us the rights to do.”

MCPSS Board Chairman Reginald Crenshaw said he respects the opinions of the protesters but added that the mask mandate will remain in place until health care leaders advise the county to do otherwise.

“Our first priority is to protect the health and safety of our children. That’s what it’s all about. It’s not about the politics,” Crenshaw told WPMI. “It’s about the health and safety of our children before we even start to teach them ABCs.”
