Coronavirus: ‘Blessing box’ set up in Alabama town for families in need

The coronavirus pandemic has changed lives and brought plenty of uncertainty, with some families wondering where their next meal will come from.

One northeastern Alabama county is trying to help out by installing a blessing box outside the library in the small town of Henegar. It is one of several the Dekalb County Extension Office has installed, WHNT reported.

A sign posted outside the library advises residents to “bring what you can” and “take what you need.”

“People especially during this COVID-19 situation where we’re at home, we’re stuck at home, we’re eating more groceries at home than we probably ever have," resident Lori Wheeler told WHNT. “That just kind of highlights when there’s a deficiency of groceries or things, especially for people in need.”

Residents are also encouraged to put nonperishable items in the box, like cleaning supplies and toiletries, the television station reported.

There are other blessing boxes in Geraldine, Fort Payne, Dog Town and Collinsville, WHNT reported.
