The trio formally known as “Dixie Chicks” changed their social media and website to ‘The Chicks’ dropping “Dixie” from their name Thursday.
A newly released music video “March March” is featured on thechicks.com. The website dixiechicks.com now redirects to the new url.
Below the new band name on the website is the statement “We want to meet this moment.”
According to a statement obtained by Rolling Stone, the band thanked New Zealand’s “The Chicks” for sharing the name with them.
“A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to ‘The Chicks’ of [New Zealand] for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name. We are honored to coexist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters. Chicks Rock!”
The new single “March March” will be on their next album “Gaslighter.”
Two weeks ago, “Lady Antebellum” changed its name to “Lady A.”
The band said they chose that name more than 14 years ago after the antebellum-style home where they shot their first photos. They said that in recent weeks, their eyes have been opened to “blind spots we didn’t even know existed” and “the injustices, inequality and biases Black women and men have always faced,” prompting a change.
In 2003, The Chicks singer Natalie Maines told an audience in London, “Just so you know, we’re ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas.”
For years following they endured criticism that included radio stations banning their music and protests outside their concerts.
