HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — Golfers had more than a sand trap to avoid when they came across a pair of massive alligators with their jaws locked into battle.
Matthew Proffitt and his group came upon the reptiles on the 18th hole at the Hilton Head Lakes golf course, the Island Packet reported.
“We were pretty sure they wouldn’t mess with us because they were locked in on each other,” Proffitt, who works at the golf course, told the Packet. “But it was pretty nerve-wracking seeing that.”
Proffitt and his group continued along. The alligators fought for another two hours, the Packet reported.
Alligator sightings are more common this time of year. Mating season is from April through June.
