Justin Bieber apologized to fans on Friday after revealing why he was forced to postpone concerts this week.
Bieber posted a video on Instagram explaining to fans that Ramsay Hunt syndrome, caused by a virus, has left one side of his face paralyzed. The “Peaches” singer, 28, said that he is currently unable to blink, smile or move his nostril on the right side of his face.
“Obviously, as you can probably see from my face, I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt syndrome. And it is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis,” Bieber said.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Ramsay Hunt syndrome occurs when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve close to the ear. It is the same virus that can cause chickenpox.
The singer said he would be resting and focusing on his health so he could resume performing.
According to CTV, Bieber’s June 10 concert in Washington has been canceled. His next scheduled concert is on June 13 in New York, according to the musician’s website.
Earlier this week, Bieber had postponed some shows for an ongoing health issue but did not reveal his diagnosis at the time.
