BATH COUNTY, Ky. — A fifth child has been found dead after a buggy carrying an Amish family turned over while attempting to cross a flooded Kentucky stream, authorities said.
According to WKYT and WTVQ, the incident occurred Wednesday afternoon in Salt Lick, a community in Bath County. Kentucky State Police said five children and one adult were traveling in a carriage pulled by a horse, which slipped while crossing the stream. The carriage then overturned, sending the passengers into the floodwaters, authorities said.
Update 3:01 p.m. EDT May 2: The fifth child was found around 11:20 a.m. Saturday, WKYT reported.
In a Facebook post, Bath County Judge-Executive Bobby Rogers wrote, “All search and rescue crews are safe, and will be leaving the area now that their mission is done. Please continue to pray for the family. I for one appreciate all efforts made, along with those volunteering to recover this child.”
Original report: The five children and an adult were crossing a low water bridge along Adams Road on Wednesday when the carriage was swept away in the water.
The adult was able to get to the banks and went to get help.
Although the adult was able to make it out safely, authorities later found four of the children dead, the news outlets reported. Officials said early Thursday that one child remains missing, according to WKYT.
Search crews will continue looking for the child Thursday morning, WTVQ reported.
