LAS VEGAS — A man has been charged after police said he threw his girlfriend’s daughter from the balcony of a Las Vegas apartment.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it happened Sunday afternoon at the Boulder Pines apartment complex, KTNV reported.
When police got to the scene, they found the unconscious 5-year-old girl on the ground. She was taken to an area hospital.
The girl’s mother, Angela Matthews, told police that Jarick Willis threw the girl from their balcony. Matthews said Willis told her that the little girl was “full of bad spirits” and that she was a “demon.”
Matthews said she found that her daughter had been thrown when she heard her son screaming from another room.
She then saw Willis leaning over the balcony and her daughter on the ground three stories below.
A witness told police the child landed face first, KLAS reported.
Matthews told police she armed herself after the incident, since she was afraid for herself and her children. She said she shot Willis during a confrontation, KTNV reported.
KLAS reported Willis left the apartment bleeding, by lowering himself from the balcony. Police found him by following a trail of blood.
Willis was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He has been charged with child abuse and/or neglect, attempted murder and domestic battery.
The little girl survived but has a fractured forearm, pelvis, leg and rib. She also has a collapsed lung and a possible fractured sternum, police said, according to KTNV.
