BOSTON — A Boston family was left confused and without a gift on Christmas, when they opened a box expecting to find a new tablet but found roofing shingles instead.
Michael Webster told WFXT that his brother had purchased the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 at a Best Buy in Boston’s South Bay and intended the tablet as a gift for his wife. When they opened presents after Christmas, they discovered there was no tablet inside the box, but rather roofing shingles.
Webster went to the store to return it but was told the item was out of stock, according to WFXT.
Undeterred, Webster went to the Square One Mall in Saugus and visited the Best Buy there.
“They asked to open it in the store,” Webster told WFXT. “When they opened the new one in the store, that one was also shingles. … I’m curious to see how many other Microsoft tablets are out there switched out with shingles. There’s no way there were just two, and we happened to get both of them.”
Webster’s brother is now waiting for the tablet to be shipped from out of state, according to WFXT.
In a statement to WFXT, a spokesperson for Best Buy said, “This is obviously not the experience we want any of our customers to have and we appreciate their patience while we worked to replace their tablet. We’re looking into what happened and how we can prevent it from happening in the future.”
