According to WHIO-TV, the incident occurred Sunday morning at the Harmony Estates Mobile Home Park. Clark County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene shortly before 11 a.m. after receiving a report that a female suspect had broken into an Ashwood Drive home and fired several shots, the news outlet reported.

When authorities tried to check inside the home, they were met with gunfire, Sheriff Deborah Burchett said. That’s when Deputy Matthew Yates, a 15-year veteran of the department, was shot, she said.

“The Clark County Special Operations and several surrounding tactical teams were called in and facilitated a rescue of the downed deputy,” said Burchett, who said Yates was flown to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment. He later died from his injuries, she said.

During the hourslong standoff, rescue crews loaded a second deputy into an ambulance about 1:30 p.m., WHIO reported. The nature and severity of the deputy’s injuries was not immediately clear.

Firefighters also responded to the residence Sunday afternoon after a blaze erupted inside, according to WHIO.

Authorities have not said whether any suspects were hurt or arrested in connection with the incident, WHIO reported. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into the incident, authorities said.
