WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. — A married couple is accused of planning to rob a Goodwill store in West Virginia, authorities said.
Andy “AJ” Maynard, 36, and Samantha Greer Maynard, 28, from Kentucky, were arrested on Tuesday at about 5:30 p.m. EST, WSAZ-TV reported.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Andy Maynard was overheard by an employee allegedly talking about robbing the thrift store in Lavalette, the television station reported.
Wayne County Sheriff Rick Thompson said deputies responded to a call that a man, later identified as Maynard, had a knife and gun, WOWK-TV reported.
Deputies said a third suspect in a vehicle fled the scene while the Maynards were being arrested, the television station reported.
Deputies said they saw a handgun in the driver’s seat of the Maynards’ vehicle, along with a sawed-off shotgun in the back seat and a revolver on the console by the passenger seat, The Herald-Dispatch of Huntington reported.
Thompson told WSAZ that Andy Maynard was a fugitive from Kentucky and his wife was wanted on drug charges in Wayne County. Both are convicted felons, Thompson added.
“When it’s this close to you, a stone’s throw away across the street, it’s unnerving,” Mike Bayless, who works across the street from the store, told the television station. “I definitely don’t want anybody at Goodwill to be getting harmed.”
