The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that a teen girl was involved in a serious crash over the weekend between a semitruck and a car.

The teen’s car had significant damage after it crossed the centerline and rolled over into the path of the semitruck, said ACSO. The driver of the semitruck swerved to avoid the crash so the girl’s car struck the semitruck’s trailer instead of head-on.

KTSP said the teen had minor injuries after the crash and no other injuries were reported.

ACSO said that the teen denied being on her phone before the crash but during their investigation, deputies saw that the car’s Bluetooth system was still streaming audio from “Stranger Things.” Deputies confronted the teen and she then admitted she was watching the show at the time of the crash.

“We are relieved this incident was not more serious, as it easily could have been. From 2016 through 2020 more than 39,000 crashes in Minnesota were related to distracted driving, causing 155 fatalities and nearly 1,000 serious injuries. As a part of our extra traffic enforcement campaign, deputies will continue to stop these drivers to enforce the laws that are designed to make our roads safer for everyone,” said ACSO.

According to KTSP, the teen received a citation and was released with a warning from ACSO.
